Linville Gorge Wilderness Area

The Linville Gorge Wilderness area, sometimes referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the East,” is one of the wildest, most rugged gorges in the eastern United States. It’s also an outdoor paradise for backpackers and hikers. The Gorge encompasses almost 12,000 acres around the Linville River, making it the third largest wilderness area in North Carolina, and one of only two wilderness gorges in the southern United States. Some of North Carolina’s most remarkable landmarks with breathtaking views reside in the gorge, including Linville Falls, Table Rock Mountain, Shortoff and Hawksbill Mountains, the Chimney’s and Sitting Bear. With over 39 miles of trails weaving through the area hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing and camping are very popular. The Linville River runs for 12 miles throughout the gorge, along with Linville Falls which drops 90 feet into the Linville Gorge. The Linville Gorge Recreation Area also provides opportunities for swimming, fishing, picnicking, and more outdoor recreation.
